Today’s area of focus is one of the most useful but under- valued diagnostic- type tools — Trace Mineral Analysis or Hair Analysis. If the eyes are considered the “Gateway to the Soul”, then the hair is the “Gateway to the Minerals.” Hair Analysis is a precise way of determining the following:

- Mineral and electrolyte levels such as calcium, magnesium, iron etc. – Trace Mineral levels such as manganese, molybdenum, boron, keys to healthy liver detoxification, skeletal health, sugar regulation etc. – Mineral ratios which are a reflection of glandular functioning and sugar metabolism. – Toxic metals including aluminum, cadmium, mercury and others which are known contributors to degenerative diseases. Taking a small amount of hair from the scalp, a laboratory analyzes the hair by a specialized method to determine a wealth of information about your health. Let’s look at some details. What types of toxins are you carrying in your system? Aluminum? Mercury? Lead? There is a very good chance that such is the case! We can identify what heavy metal toxins are present and design a Personalized Treatment for their removal. For example, if aluminum is present in the system, there is only one substance that can remove it — phosphatidyl choline. In addition to identification of toxic metals, Hair Analysis will identify the levels and ratios of healthy minerals in your system. Do I have enough Calcium in my system? Are my iron levels healthy? Hair Analysis determines exact levels and ratios based on science. Again, all guesswork is removed and an exact Program is designed to fit your needs. With the tremendous amount of products that are available, this method allows YOUR system to determine what is missing, what is needed and what you may have too much of.

Minerals are exceptionally important, arguably more important than vitamins. Iron deficiency can add to obesity. Calcium deficiency can contribute to insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks. Potassium and sodium deficiencies can contribute to adrenal insufficiency, thus lowering your energy levels. These are just a few of the 60+ examples that Hair Analysis will identify. In my years of practice, I have interpreted about 1200 Hair Analysis and have truly appreciated the exceptional value of them. Take advantage of this inexpensive, outstanding diagnostic tool. Your health is worth it!

To your health,

Dr. David Orman

Health and Autumn September 26, 2008

It was our usual hot, humid summer. We consumed more water than a fish and now, finally, FINALLY, the weather has broken and Fall is upon us. Just as the trees, plants and other aspects of Nature change, so too must our bodies adjust to this new season. How we treat ourselves now will dictate how we feel in the Winter in particular. The colds or flus people get and attribute it to “it was going around” or “it is the ‘flu season’” is almost always a result of improper preparation in Autumn.

The organs associated with this time of year are the Lungs and the Large Intestine. The lungs are responsible for many functions. In addition to the obvious respiratory actions, the lungs are responsible for:

  • Extracting the Qi or energy from the air. The spleen extracts it from food and together, it comprises our energy system.
  • Lungs control the blood vessels and aid the heart in circulating the blood.
  • The regulate water passages, directing fluids down to the bladder and kidneys.
  • Lungs control skin and hair. Have issues with either, many times by treating the lungs it can resolve said issues.
  • Traditionally, the lungs are the administrators responsible for orderly and lawful conduct. When such is lacking, anti-social behavior is the end result. (It makes one wonder if people did not smoke, what impact it would have on society?)

There are many ways of addressing the lungs. In terms of foods, supplements an exercise, the most valuable. . . . . .to be continued next week.

Have you ever had the experience whereby Nature, God, the Universe, call it what you will, seems to give you confirmation that you are on the right path? I made the commitment to study Russian and a week later, I came across one of the most interesting health providers in Russian history, Porphyry Ivanov.

Ivanov was a teacher, healing and ecentric who lived to the age of 85, at a time and in a place where such an age was uncommon. His life was ordinary until the age of 35, when he described in his diary whereby he simply uncovered new, “unprecedented” ideas as it relates to health. Though these ideas were not exactly new, he nonetheless taught them to the masses at a time when communism was in full force. The ideas were simply and revolved around following Nature, being in harmony with Her and applying 7 very basic principles. They are:

1. Live with the constant wish to do good to people, and if thou hast done that, newer recollect of, and hurry to do more.

- What a beautiful concept. It fits with virtually every religious and spiritual principle — help others.

2. To everything with pleasure and joy. And until thou hast learned to get joyfulness of doing a job, consider that thou dost not know how to do it.

- This is an ancient principle from the Orient. You have not mastered anything until you completely master it. 99% is the same as 0%, be it a skill or an emotion.

3. Drink neither wine nor vodka.

- A Russian not drinking vodka?! Newest research suggests that moderate ingestion of wine is considered healthy. In natural medicine, it is said that ingestion of grape juice would have the same benefits, not perhaps not quite as enjoyable. In any event, Ivanov has the themes of balance and moderation in all his writings.

4. One day a week, go without food and water.

- There are a number of protocols that advocate short fasts such as 24 hour fasting. The notion here is to simply give the digestive system a rest. Ivanov is the first person I have ever read that suggests 24 hours without fluids. His theory is that “sick cells” thrive on water and in water’s absence, they will die.

5. Walk barefoot all year round upon the grass and snow, at least a few minutes each day.

- Oriental medicine states that walking in the grass is considered medicine for the liver. Walking in dirt is considered medicine for the spleen, while water or snow is healthy for the kidneys.

6. Every morning and evening, bath in cold water.

- Uniquely Russian principle here. Get a bucket of cold water and pour away. The notion here is 2-fold: (1) ice water will stimulate the thyroid gland and improve it functioning and (2) When cold water is applied, there is a quick and temporary raising of the body’s temperature. This is said to kill all unhealthy bacteria, viruses, proteins etc. Ivanov also described a hormone release and stimulation to all nerves. There is evidence in the medical literature for the last 2 in particular. Nerve-based diseases such as neuropathy is often treated successfully by cold water submersion.

7. Live in harmony with Nature, in summer and in winter.

- Pretty straightforward here. We have gone to extremes — from waste, pollution and litter to environmental extremists and over-regulation. There is a point whereby we can use but not abuse. The Native American tribes are perhaps the best example of this. They lived on the land, used animals for food and clothing but alway found the balance. What marvelous teachers.

Of all the principles and writing from Ivanov, 2 main themes are seen throughout — live in harmony with Nature and make cold your friend.

A Warning About Plastics September 16, 2008

A study released Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association suggested a new concern about BPA. Because of the possible public health implications, the results “deserve scientific follow-up,” the study authors said. Using a health survey of nearly 1,500 adults, they found that those exposed to higher amounts of BPA were more likely to report having heart disease and diabetes.

But the study is preliminary, far from proof that the chemical caused the health problems. Two Dartmouth College analysts of medical research said it raises questions but provides no answers about whether the ubiquitous chemical is harmful.

I wrote an article on this very topic about 4 years ago. This is one reason why we use dark, glass bottles for Hgh Plus. One of the differences that make the difference!

Running in the Heat September 6, 2008

Today was yet another hot and humid day. Not the kind of day for running, unless you are a lizard or some type of reptile. A friend asked me if I had an tips for running in the heat. I told him 3:

  1. Get a really large refrigerator
  2. Move treadmill into said refrigerator
  3. Run from May to October inside

In the event you cannot find or fit such a refrigerator into your home, there are actually a couple of hot weather tips. Most you know already but allow me to review.

  • Stay hydrated. This is #1. Using a combination of water and electrolyte replacements is a obvious must.
  • Avoid running mid-day. Start and end as early as possible to avoid the worst of the worst.
  • Run in areas with as much shade as possible. Again an obvious one here but shade will reduce temperatures 8-10 degrees.
  • Don’t push it. Distance, no problem Speed training, potential problem. Moral of the story – go at a slower rate until the temperatures begin to lower.
  • Wear loose fitting clothes. These allow heat to escape more easily.
  • Pour water over yourself – Up to 70 percent of the heat you can lose goes out through the top of your head.
  • Eat a ton of watermelon, either on the route or when finished. This is the best substance for ridding the body of internal heat.

Here is one you probably have not heard. The herb Spearmint (first choice) or Peppermint can be a major help. These herbs are cooling in nature and have the ability to pull heat from the core of the body, thus keeping it cooler.

Side effect? None. However, there are some major side-benefits. Both herbs are notorous for calming the stomach. Nausea related heat is commonplace and both can go a long way to reducing and/or eliminating it.

The 2 organs associated with the production of internal heat are the liver and the lungs. The liver is the major star while the lungs have to do more so with the superficial levels. Lo and behold, Spearmint and Peppermint are known to strengthen both organs.

You can find both in health stores and come in liquid form. I would suggest getting a glycerin-based liquid versus alcohol. Equally effective but the former is slightly more cooling in nature.

I had an interesting experience today. I was just past my 18 mile mark of a 20 mile run when I heard 2 guys laughing so loudly, I could not help but smile and join in the laughter. Of course I had no idea what they were laughing about but that is another topic. They were both soaked to the bone but the one in the blue shirt caught my attention. He was an above the elbow, double amputee.

I saw him with double metallic “hooks” where hands would normally be and looked down at my hand, firmly grasping the water bottle. I also felt my arms moving back and forth, albeit in a dramatically lesser pace than a couple of hours ago. After this I only had one thought. . .

The weather is absolutely perfect!
