Today’s area of focus is Functional Strength Training (FST) for improved sport performance and fat loss.
I admit it. Ever since I found the local YMCA in Hazleton, PA at the age of 14, I have been a “gym rat.” I am one of the few people who actually love going to the gym. It has been a personal passion — finding the ideal training protocol for the given purpose of the moment. Over the years, I have tested and trained in countless methods, programs, protocols and the like. Recently, I started applying a method called Functional Strength Training and was pleasantly shocked at the results.
Pure strength training is straight forward. . .
See weight. Pick up weight. Do as often as possible with the heaviest weight possible. Continually improve. Rest if need be.
The biggest problem is that you can lift huge amounts of weight but that strength does not always transfer to a given sport. When it does transfer, only a (disturbingly small) percentage of it transfers. Ex/ You can lift a ton in the bench press but it helps your golf stroke or running or tennis minimally. There is a long, detailed physiological reason for this but it would take about 6 pages. Suffice it to say, there is a better way — Functional Strength Training (FST).
FST takes the same basic exercises but adds a twist or 2. What are the twists? Instead of doing a standing shoulder press, take off your shoes and stand on dyna disks. Or on a bosu ball. In other words, make the surface unstable, the angle odd and engage the whole body.
For example, instead of having two 25 pound plates (one on each side), have one 25 pound plate and 30 pounds on the other side. Or 20. Make it imbalanced. This forces the whole body to balance, move and work as a whole.
The “rules” are simple:
The whole program should be less than 60 minutes and it is very challenging. HOWEVER, with challenges comes rewards. Great rewards.
It is the most effective fat burning method known. Case in point. This past Saturday, I did a 10 mile run. Using my Garmin 305 GPS unit, it showed a usage of 2,002 calories. It took a little over 2 hours to complete. Today, I did the FST in 49 minutes and burned 1,968 calories (definitely more as I lost satellite connection on at least a half dozen occasions).
In addition, the additional muscle creates additional calorie usage, EVEN WHEN RESTING. There is a term called EPOC which refers to the calories burned, post-exercise. Weight training burns 3-5 times more EPOC calories compared to every other form of exercise.
Do this plan 3-4 times per week. Add Hgh Plus along with a healthy nutritional protocol and sensible eating at least 80% of the time and anyone can be at their IDEAL, DESIRED WEIGHT in less than 4 months.

I moved to FL some 14 years ago to start a practice. There were a number of major challenges — unknown area, a clinic that was in flux and tremendous competition. As such, I took a 2-phase approach: (1) Go the traditional route with a weekly radio show, monthly TV, articles and lectures in every conceivable facility (some you would not believe) and (2) Do the unusual. They included teaching I Ching classes, Feng Shui (before it was popular), auriculomedicine and doing odd diagnosis– using how people walked, speech patterns, how they answered questions and. . . .going to their homes and doing “home diagnosis.”
“Home Diagnosis” was both entertaining and informative. In short, it is based on the principle of “how you do anything is how you do everything.” It is was also based on colors chosen or not, where things were places and themes noted. Let me share some examples.
Ex. 1/ People who were generally messy, nearly always had issues with the liver. With liver issues come issues with depression, frustration and anger. Issues with vision (both physical and psychological; that is, “I cannot SEE any solutions.” etc.) Blood related issues such as anemia were predominant and there was an absence of the color green from wall, furniture etc.
Ex. 2/ People who had leaky faucets or problems relating to water such as floods nearly always had issues relating to the kidneys. Symptoms including low back pains, poor memory, poor hearing and prostate issues were common place. They were often stuck in ruts, afraid to make any type of life changing. . . or more so, life improving moves. “I hate where I live by I will stay here.” “I despise my job but will stick with it because of the benefits.” When options are presented that are a significant upgrade to their current life status, such individual would get excited, REALLY excited and do. . . . nothing.
I once when to a couple’s house to evaluate their son. Even before seeing him, I went on a 6 or 7 minute dissertation of what he was like based upon his room. When you know what you are looking for and how to interpret the information, people are a wide open book. We are very predictable creatures for the most part.
I only did this about 20 times so times as they were time consuming but this generated a minimum of 150 office visits and subsequent referrals. Moral of the story, regardless of what type of business you are in, be it sports retail or health or selling insurance, there are many ways of generating business. People want great information first. They also like being entertained to a degree. Combine the two in that order, and you have a winning formula.
