Dear Standard Medical Community,

Thank you for taking the time to read this. It will save me time in those very rare instances when I come to visit you.

I appreciate what you are attempting to do but you are off track. As such, I have a list of requests if you will. Please allow me to start with the following.

  • I do not want to take an annual eye test. My vision is akin to a hawk due to the fact that I run and exercise strenuously. This produces a natural chelating process in my body, clearing away the potential blockages in the hair-thin blood vessels that feed my baby blues.
  • I do not want an annual physical exam. I take care of myself by eating well, training hard and living life with passion. If something is awry, I know applied kinesiology and can adjust my nutritional protocol accordingly. This is called preventive medicine, a term that would behoove you to learn.
  • I do not need nor want an HIV exam. I researched the topic many years ago and spoke on many occassions with THE major figure in research, Dr. Peter Duesberg. Dr. Duesburg was correct as evidenced by the 2 decade trend — HIV is not the cause of AIDS. Drug abuse and the use of AZT are. I know this upsets some people but I wonder when “not upsetting” people became more important than truth, particularly with medicine.
  • I do not want vaccinations. Have you ever read the side effects of this stuff? Do you even know it is loaded with mercury and other toxins?! If you answered no, you are not doing your job well. If you answered yes, your actions are unconsciounable.
  • I do not want any GI exams. If something is out of kilter, fear not. If I cannot correct it, I will get in touch with you. I do not need any perferations or unintentional infections ruining my day.
  • I do not want any x-rays or other medical scans. The odds of developing cancer from radiation exposure are small, but risks do rise the more you get zapped and the younger you are when you’re radiated, according to the National Academy of Sciences. You really need to read more.
  • I do not want an annual prostate exam. I take zinc and do not eat much sugar. My prostate and accompanying packaging are just fine, thank you.
  • The one thing I do like is a blood test now and again. Having said that, you do not know how to interpret it. A monkey can see if something is outside the norm. What if all is “normal” and yet a person does not feel well?
  • I do not want an annual skin cancer exam. Yes, I live in the sun belt and have the German/European skin, but I also know how to take care of myself. Which reminds me? Why do rarely if ever, teach this information so as to prevent such problems?
  • Finally, I do not want your universal care system. I researched and spoke with people in the UK and Canada and other countries where this system is in place. It is a train wreck.

You tests are for diseases and risks for diseases. I thought you said you were HEALTH providers. What kind of message are you giving my body by continually “ruling out” these horrid problems.

In short, I am more interested in living than I am in dying.

Thank you for your time.

Your friend,
David

What If and the story of Patterns January 29, 2009

I found myself asking the question at times and now that I am on the teaching end, it is interesting to hear it with “different ears.”  “What do I do if this or that happens?” Referring to dealing with kicks, punching, knife attacks etc. Or are we?

Have you ever found yourself providing an answer AND hearing it as you speak it. It is as if Inspiration is temporarily renting your vocal chords. Such was the case in this instance. Instead of the usual “You adjust your hand position” or “Move your center” or standard textbook answers that I have always heard, something new came forth.

“If you are in a position whereby you have to defend yourself, something went wrong loooong before this moment.”  I was as surprised by the answer as much as my students. When you keep the door open, you never know when Inspiriation will pay a visit.

On the way home, the statement really hit me (we are dealing with martial arts here :) ). I looked at everything I considered problems or challenges and it was NEVER. . as in 0% of the time. . . that one thing. Or the last thing. It was always a compilation of actions or non-actions. A series of unfortunate events if you will.

Think about it. Was it the last slice or pizza or that one piece of chocolate that caused the extra 20 pounds? The one drink? The one issue at work? With the exception of scenarios such as “I shot the boss,” it is rarely if ever one isolated event.

At the beginning of this year, Lisa and I made a pact between us. If one of us was off track, the other would note the pattern that led to the unwanted event. What were the 5 prior steps that led to XYZ and how many times have I repeated this.

I have to say that this is one of the most powerful “techniques” I ever experienced. We truly are creatures of habit and many of these habits are either so engrained in our psyche or our awareness of these is simply shut off, we often view these as new, separate and isolated events. Nothing can be further from accurate.

Case in point. Aikido has been a huge positive impact in my life. For me, the environment, teacher and overall experience must be inspiring. I struggle with average or commonplace. Over the past few months, this unfortunately has been the case at the dojo I train. Instead of stopping, looking for options and taking new action, my M.O. was to simply grind it out. Does this approach work? Yes, very well as a matter of fact. It will allow you to achieve your goal, albeit in a suffering, miserable fashion. Lisa noted that and how this pattern has shown up in my life and how the 5 or 6 (or probably 200) major “red flags” were ignored.

Monday morning, I decided I did not want to live this pattern any more. I walked away from the dojo, re-evaluated and took action. So how did this approach of pattern adjustment work? By that afternoon, I found one of the most beautiful looking dojos I have ever seen, with a flexible schedule and an impressive teacher. My black belt test will go as scheduled. No interuptions at all.

Somewhere lodged in the gray matter was a pattern of “grinding it out.” Or maybe it was “settling for.” Either way, it was time to clear the lens from my Life Vision. Kurt Hahn, the great developer of experiential education perhaps said it best:

There is more to us than we know.

If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less.

The Era of the Liver January 23, 2009

Last post covered the connection between the spleen and how we are into this current situation, both health wise and economy-wise. Today, I play Nostradamus.

In my opinion, we are entering the era of the liver. Here’s why:

We have a huge split in America today and no it is not the obvious red/blue state divide.  This split crosses party, religious, age, sex, race and any other line you can think of.  It has been building for a very long time, but has increased dramatically in the past 40 years or so. It is a gap between the producers and the takers.

There are those who believe in self sufficiency and “leaning to fish for a life time.” Without this group, there is no America. In fact, there is no _______ (insert the name of every other country here).  They are the small business owners, the dedicated employees, the entrepreneur who builds a huge company over time.  Despite what is parroted in the media, the top 10% of this group pays 86% of all the taxes, according to IRS figures. In short, they pretty much are the economy. Yet, they are the most vilified group today.

On the flip side, there are those who want everything handed to them. Free of course. Please note I am NOT talking about those that truly are in need such as the mentally challenged for example. I am referring to the able bodied who have decided everything should be given to them simply because they possess the ability to breath.

And so, the gap grows and grows. The end result is frustration, anger and/or depression. The end result is major liver congestion. The producers are tired of taking risks, working hard and having more and more taken from them because they are the “have’s.” The takers want more because their lifestyle requires it. Ex/ Overeating results in obesity. Obesity results in a myriad of diseases. This costs money to treat. And so the cycle continues.

For the next 4 – 7 years or so due to the buildup of liver energy, I predict a rise in the following health related issues:

  • Eye and/or vision problems. The number of people who will wear glasses will increase.
  • Diabetes will increase.
  • Anemia will be more common.
  • Problems with ligaments, tendons and joints will increase
  • Nail (finger nail and toe nail) problems.
  • An increase in problems relating to pregnancy will be noted.
  • An increase in the number of peculiar bacterias.

Here are other predictions in no particular order:

  • I would also anticipate an increase in popularity of violent sports (MMA, football, rugby), extreme sports (Bungee cord-type sports — new ones will be created), the end of the so-called reality shows and an increase in popularity for psychic-type shows.
  • People are as afraid of the future now as any time in history. A psychological principle states the higher the level of fear, the higher the suggestibility. Notice how this will apply to the media in particular. (In case you have not noticed, I think the CNNs and NBCs and pseudo-anchors like keith olberman are nothing short of immoral, low energy sources.)
  • Blood drives will push hard for donors as it blood levels will go to critical levels. It would not surprise me that they will start to offer significant monies OR even a law requiring XYZ people to donate.
  • Extremes in all forms (not just the aforementioned sports) will be witnesses in all aspects of society. You will see  it in medicine, sport, politics etc. Some of this will benefit society while others will be disturbing.
  • The “green movement” will grow in popularity and become ingrained in schools. Right now it is at an extreme end. Eventually the voices of reason (such as the 650+ scientists who signed the paper questioning theories such as global warming) will be heard and a rational approach will evolve. Population could end in 50 years.
  • Jealousy will be “epidemic” like. Yes, the “ugly green monster” will be seen like never before. TV shows and books will feature this emotion. The right will reframe it as patriotism and the left will reframe it as disenfranchisement. They both are inaccurate.
  • High winds and loud noises. Probably attack in a large city on the western half of America. Another possibility is a major figure such as the president having a heart attack. Something very drastic. Bet the house on this one.
  • A noted lack of planning will continue to plague half (or s0) of the population. The other half or so will go to the other extreme — planning to the letter. This will cause further “gapping.”
  • It is near the end of the fossil fuel era. None too soon on this one. Mother Earth will smile broadly at this one.
  • Finally and perhaps best(?), you will see some of the creative works — in art and in science — that has ever been produced in the history of humankind. It will be visually based and dramatic. As an example, it would not surprise me that something like blindness will be cured during this time frame. Yes, THAT kind of greatness!

A lot of guesses here just from the liver!

So, now you know. What do you do?

It does not matter if you start with the liver or if you start with external actions that will eventually affect the liver. Your call. If you start with the liver itself, there is nothing better, nor simpler than castor oil packs. Placing this on the liver a couple of times per week does wonders to assist the two MAJOR functions of the liver — overall body detoxification and spreading the energy throughout the whole system. Herbs such as bupleurum, dandelion, milk thistle and foods that are sour in flavor and green in color will have your liver smiling from lobe to lobe.

If an external start is your style, first thing is clean and organize your spaces. These include your home, your office (especially the desk) and your car. The liver loves organization and orderliness.

Secondly, “zen’ your life; that is, make it as simple and straightforward as possible. Have 10 things to do? Do them, but do them one at a time. Only when you finish #1 do you move to #2.

Thirdly, move. Though this suggestion is just basic Prevention 101 material, it is especially effective for the liver. Your life will dramatically improve when and if you liver is flowing smoothly. The converse is also true.

Finally, have a vision and live into that vision. Think big. Think of things that will have an impact on self and others in a most favorable way. Most of us have a tendency to create “nice” and “doable” goals. Now is the time to step up to big, “impossible” realms.  Many people. . . MANY people are waiting for your end creation. Only you can assist them. Take on this responsibility. Become the producer.

Then teach a taker to become one.

Only then will real change and hope be experience.

The Health Of America January 21, 2009

The Health of America We all have skills that we have honed over the years. Some can paint or draw. Others (certainly not named me) are fantastic at building or fixing anything and everything. Two of the odd skills I feel have been assets in my life are the skills of observation and prediction. The former is pretty straight forward. Having a master’s degree in counseling and psychological services and being heavily involved in hypnotherapy and NLP, I had to develop the skill of observation if I wanted any degree of success with clients. Mostly, this skill was developed due to the great fortune of having excellent and demanding teachers. We had to excel, not just skate by, if we were to be awarded certifications.

When the bar is set high, people have a tendency to reach it or at least achieve greater than expected results. Prediction skills are a natural byproduct of observation. You are drilled and drilled into recognizing patterns, be it behavioral, speech or emotional ones and ensuing trends emerge. For example, if someone tell me they will “probably give me a call sometime next week,” I can say with about 98% certainty that I will not hear from them. This is not Nostradamus or Edgar Cayce or anything of that nature. No spirits speak to me (Okay, sometimes they whisper to me on 20 mile runs). I have no idea when the world will end or when the Cubs will win the World Series or anything of this nature. When it comes to health and life trends, now we can talk.

I have focused the last 20 years or so on the world of natural medicine. From nutrition to herbs to acupuncture to kinesiology, that has been my passion. In this time, I have seen a rather amazing trend o as it relates to patients and the economic health of America. It is the classic microcosm/macrocosm model; that is, what happens on a small scale, happens on a large on. The last 8 years have seen an upside down “V” chart.

The 2000 and 2001 were low economically and morale-wise, given the 9-11 tragedy. During this time, the number of cases of heart diseases increased. Why? The heart correlates with depression and this was in fact, a rather depressing time period for the most part. The time period after 9-11 saw an increase in kidney, bladder, prostate, low back and bone related problems. Fear was the dominate energy and kidneys are the home of fear and courage. It is not surprising too that many acts of courage were also reported domestically and from our brave military. Most of the next few years (‘03-’06 or so) were extremely abundant. America last saw that level of prosperity in the mid-90s and mid-80s also (see a trend here?).

The main health issue during this time was, not surprisingly, obesity. It was rising continually for several decades but really blew out of proportion during this time frame. This time period and the health correlation is the reason we are in this tough spot today. Obesity is of course, a mark of excess. It affects virtually every organ, gland and system but in particular, the spleen. The spleen has many functions such as controlling blood, governing the muscles and digestion. One of the little known functions is that the spleen “houses thought.” This means that the spleen influences our capacity for thinking, studying, concentration, focusing and judgment. Can you see what is coming here?

Example of the 2005 Spleen in action: Person A can afford a $200K home. Instead they purchase a $350K and add a slew of upgrades. The bank, all too willing (or in some cases REQUIRED BY LAW) to give monies to those who cannot afford to pay it back, do so with little regard to the consequences. As mentioned prior, one needs not be Nostradamus Jr. to spot predictable trends. The spleen governs excess. As people ate more, obesity increased. As obesity increased, excessive spending increased.

As excessing spending increased, huge dept mounted. As huge dept mounted, worry (another spleen emotion) kicked in. To deal with worry, people ate more which increased obesity. And so the hamster wheel spun out of control. Here is another spleen prediction example with a different twist. A number of places are going out of business from the larger chains (Circuit City) to the “ma and pa boutiques.”

Why? The simple answer is “because of the economy.” Is it? Well, sort of but not quite.

Many of these stores fell into the “spleen trap.” Firstly, the spleen does not like change. It like routines, sameness or ruts, depending upon your perspective. Lets talk Circuit City as an example. If you went into one of these places 10 years ago, it is pretty much the same as it was the last week they were in business.

Yes, different toys but the layout and approach had not changed at all. What had changed is the demands of the consumer. Consumers want one-stop shopping. Time is a dwindling commodity for most and the thought of going to 4 stores for 4 different items has become an obsolete impracticality today. This is one of the reasons WalMart, Sam’s Club and other such stores are still doing pretty well. Walmart’s stock is up nearly $7 in the past 2 years. Side note: I do not know who the president or CEO of Circuit City was or what s/he looks like but I would bet the house that s/he had a weight issue.

The spleen is the major organ associated with obesity. Okay, so this addresses the bigger stores, what about the “ma and pa” boutiques? (On a personal note, I generally love these types of stores and am sad to see many of them go by the wayside. ) Part of the answer is the same as above – they have not kept up with the needs or changing demands of the public. It is also a natural (albeit unfortunate for the owner(s)) part of every economy. It is a economic detoxification plan of sorts. It is at all surprising that detox formulas are so popular now. Sales in detox-based formulas have increase over 300% in the past 18 months? Every generation has its “economic detoxification.”

We went from vinyl records to 8-tracks to CDs to MP3 to ???? For the consumer, this is great. For the person who owns the vinyl record store, it could be a disaster or an opportunity. If you can spot trends in health, you will see the virtually identical trends in the economy and other areas of life. You can also spot the cure.

In this case, those who take on the responsibility of health, particularly of the spleen will ride this out and eventually prosper. Those who depend on the government for another idiotic strategy will continue to remain obese. And struggling financially. So does this mean if a person eats more squash, their house will not be foreclosed on? The choices of yesterday have resulted in the consequences of today. We cannot go back in time and correct them. However, we can prevent future ones. By taking care of one’s health and our spleen, we are giving ourselves the best opportunity to make creative, responsible choices.

Most of the choices made now are governed by fear and/or jealousy. How many versions of “Let’s stick it to the rich now!” have you heard in the past few months?! Such an approach will not improve your situation to any degree. In fact, it probably will make it worse due to increased costs for goods and services. It is also low energy. Addressing your health, your spleen, your spending habits etc., will have dramatic impacts on all aspects of your life. I spoke with a former patient the other day and he asked me some health based questions.

We talked, discussed options and settled on a course of action. Later in the conversation, the topic switched to the economy and his current struggles. It was predictably amazing to hear the identical phrases used to identify the same causes. With a little assistance, he began to connect the dots and finally, with a bit of needed laughter asked, “Which one should I start with?” It is such a good feeling to know the EXACT answer to a question.

In this case, the answer was “YES.”
